Verses 88-92 GROUP_743 19.88-92
88
وَقَالُوا اتَّخَذَ الرَّحْمَنُ وَلَدًا
They say, ‘The Gracious One has begotten a son.’
89
لَقَدْ جِئْتُمْ شَيْئًا إِدًّا
Assuredly, you have uttered a monstrous falsehood:
90
تَكَادُ السَّمَاوَاتُ يَتَفَطَّرْنَ مِنْهُ وَتَنشَقُّ الْأَرْضُ وَتَخِرُّ الْجِبَالُ هَدًّا
the heavens might well-nigh burst thereat, and the earth break asunder, and the mountains fall down in pieces,
91
أَن دَعَوْا لِلرَّحْمَنِ وَلَدًا
because they ascribe a son to the Gracious One.
92
وَمَا يَنبَغِي لِلرَّحْمَنِ أَن يَتَّخِذَ وَلَدًا
It does not become the majesty of the Compassionate God to take to Himself a son:

Commentary
(a) Belief in the existence of God’s children can be explained in either of two ways: that He is in need of assistants, or like ordinary people, He is desirous of having children. Both of these propositions are baseless. The construction of the earth and the heavens is so perfect that it is unimaginable that their Maker and Mover could be prone to such weaknesses as man evinces. The grand, majestic image of the Creator, projected by His creations themselves, is not at all compatible with the concept of God being in need of children.
